J.コールの3枚目のミックステープ『Friday Night Lights』は、2010年にリリースされ、メジャーデビューアルバム『Cole World : The Sideline Story』がリリースされる半年ほど前にリリースされています。
タイトルは、2004年に放映された映画『Friday Night Lights』をそのまま用いています。
映画の内容は、テキサスの小さな街にある高校で、アメフトに情熱を注ぐ高校生たちと、元スター選手のコーチによる交流を感動的に描くもので、彼のラップのキャリアのスタートとも重なる部分があったのでしょう。
コールはインタビューで、
「このアルバムは俺のキャラクターをそのまま表現したものなんだ。俺のラップのキャリアはまるで、高校生のバスケ選手が試合に入る前みたいな感情でさ。ゲームに対してワクワクする気持ちもあるし、不安だったり緊張する気持ちも入り混じった、そんな気持ちなんだ。思うにこの感情がまさに『Friday Night Lights』だね」
と語っています。今では偉大なラッパーになった彼の活躍も長い目で見ると、このアルバムは彼の「高校生時代」のような若々しさを感じますね。
今曲” In The Morning “はドレイクとの一曲。
ドレイクはファーストアルバム『Thank Me Later』を出したばかり、コールはまだメジャーデビューしかしていなかった状況で、まさに「若手」だった二人が2010年にコラボし、その約10年後に二人ともラップゲームを代表するラッパーになっていることを考えながら聞くと、何とも感慨深いです。。
これが彼らのコラボとしては、最初にして唯一の曲になっているのですが、いつかまた二人で曲を出して欲しいですね〜。
